Those of you who follow my writings know that I am not a fan of running — but I am a fan of anything that you enjoy doing that is exercise-related.
Running can be good for you, but it can also be very hard on the joints. It can also cause your body to crave more carbohydrates than you actually need and cause your body to overproduce insulin. Insulin is linked directly to heart disease and excessive weight gain. Unless you are careful, you can over-eat simple carbohydrates and refined foods, thinking they are needed or even healthy, and wind up over-fat.
If you run, choose a diet that modulates your carbohydrates so you still lose fat but you do not do your body the injustice of doing a lot of exercise with nothing to show for it other than greater endurance.
We all wouldn’t mind looking leaner and more fit!

If you choose to run, I recommend these two tips:
-
Walk/Run
Rather than just running, unless you are an avid runner or marathoner, try the walk/jog technique. This has many advantages to just running. First, most people are way over their lactate threshold — or their fat-burning state — and well into their sugar-burning state when they run. Their heart rate is way too high to burn a lot of fat. They burn calories, sure, but you can eat a bagel and wreck the calories required for a 45-minute run!
Walk/run allows you to stay under your lactate threshold and burn more pure bodyfat during exercise while still getting all the exercise you need for your heart and lungs. Plus you will not crave the carbs like you do after a long run.
-
Protein-up Rather Than Carb-up
Run one hour after eating a protein-rich meal. Rather than “carbing up”, try using moderate carbs from unrefined sources with ample lean protein foods. Your body can use some of the protein for energy, which creates an even greater caloric demand on your system. The end result can be more bodyfat burned in the same amount of work.
